Mastercard and BCR test the first commercial payment via AI agent in Romania

Mastercard and BCR announced the completion of Romania’s first live commercial transaction initiated by an artificial intelligence agent and authenticated within a real operational framework. The test marks the country’s entry into a new stage of digital payments, where software can act on behalf of the customer, with the customer’s approval.

The transaction was processed through Mastercard Agent Pay, infrastructure developed for AI agent-assisted commerce. In the presented scenario, a digital agent purchased an experience available on Priceless.com for a BCR customer. The technical flow was orchestrated by PayOS, a platform specialized in payments for automated e-commerce.

The central element of this model is shifting the execution decision to a software agent, without removing human control. According to the companies involved, the user gives explicit consent, and every stage of the payment remains verifiable.

From a technical perspective, card data is not transmitted directly, being replaced with digital tokens dedicated to the transaction. Authentication was carried out through Mastercard Payment Passkeys, a technology that reduces dependence on traditional passwords and introduces modern identity confirmation methods.

For the banking sector, the test is relevant because it indicates the future direction of interaction between customers and financial services: product selection, offer comparison, and purchase completion could be delegated to software agents.

However, the pace of commercial adoption remains to be seen. Large-scale expansion will depend on regulation, consumer trust, clarity of responsibilities in case of error, and merchants’ ability to integrate such flows into existing systems.
