Mastercard and MEAT launch strategic partnership to digitalize Romanian tourism
Mastercard and the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship, Tourism and Digitalization (MEATD) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening Romania’s position as a competitive and attractive international tourist destination. The collaboration focuses on using data analytics and digital innovation to better understand visitor behavior and to support the development of tourism infrastructure, targeting sustainable growth and well-founded public policies.
In 2024, Romania recorded more than 14 million arrivals in authorized tourist accommodation units, a 4.5% increase from the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Nearly 2.4 million of these were foreign visitors. Against this backdrop, the partnership seeks to reduce the tourism deficit, estimated at €4.3 billion in 2024 according to the National Bank of Romania, by attracting more international tourists and boosting local spending.
“Mastercard has extensive experience working with tourism authorities around the world, providing data-driven solutions that have helped destinations grow and develop effective promotion strategies. We are pleased to bring this expertise to Romania through a partnership that supports the sustainable growth of the local tourism industry,” said Cosmin Vladimirescu, General Manager Mastercard Romania and Croatia.
Through Mastercard’s expertise in analyzing international tourist spending behavior, the Ministry will gain valuable insights into visitors’ countries of origin, average length of stay, spending habits, and travel preferences. These insights will guide targeted promotion campaigns and public policies adapted to the realities of Romania’s nine tourism regions — from Transylvania and Bucovina to Dobrogea and Bucharest.
The partnership marks a significant step toward a modern, data-driven and innovation-based approach to tourism, with tangible benefits for the economy, local entrepreneurs, and Romania’s international image.
