Rezolv Energy and A2A Sign Major 150 GWh Energy Agreement in Romania
Rezolv Energy, a renewable energy developer backed by Actis, has signed a 7-year Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with A2A, a leading Italian group in energy, water, and environmental sectors. The deal covers the acquisition of 150 GWh per year of wind energy generated by Rezolv’s VIFOR wind farm in Buzău County, Romania.
This renewable energy, capable of powering around 73,000 households annually, will prevent the emission of approximately 63,000 tons of CO2. This agreement marks the sixth VPPA that Rezolv Energy has signed since June, bringing the company’s total contracted capacity to 460 GWh annually, the largest PPA portfolio held by any developer in Southeast Europe.
Located near the Carpathian Mountains, the VIFOR wind farm boasts exceptional wind conditions and, once fully operational, will become one of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe. Phase 1 of the project will see the installation of 192 MW, with plans to extend capacity to 461 MW in Phase 2. Construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, with the wind farm becoming operational by the end of 2025. Developed through Rezolv’s subsidiary, First Looks Solutions, the project adheres to the highest international sustainability standards.
This project holds significant importance for a region historically reliant on fossil fuels. The switch to renewable energy will play a key role in Romania’s energy transition and support the country’s climate goals.
Alastair Hammond, CEO of Rezolv Energy, commented, “Virtual Power Purchase Agreements are still relatively new in Southeast Europe but are increasingly important in facilitating the energy transition. In this case, we are helping both to decarbonize and to support Romania in reaching its climate targets. It’s a win-win situation.”
Rezolv Energy, launched by Actis 18 months ago, already has over 2 GW of clean energy ready for construction across Southeast Europe. In addition to the VIFOR wind farm, their projects include the Dama Solar Park in western Romania, with a capacity of 1,044 MW, which will be the largest solar power plant in Europe once completed, as well as the 600 MW Dunărea East & West wind farms in Romania’s Constanța County, and the 229 MW St. George solar project in northeastern Bulgaria.
