Alessio Cioni Named CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo Bank România, Brings Over 20 Years of International Experience
Intesa Sanpaolo Bank România, a subsidiary of the prominent European financial group Intesa Sanpaolo, has appointed Alessio Cioni as its new Chief Executive Officer and General Director. With the official approval of the National Bank of Romania, Cioni’s mandate began on October 8, 2024, marking a significant leadership transition for the bank. He succeeds Paolo Vivona, who has taken on a new executive role within the Group.
Alessio Cioni brings a wealth of expertise to the role, with over two decades of international experience in banking and finance. His leadership background spans multiple countries, including the United States, Serbia, Croatia, and Egypt, where he held various senior positions within Intesa Sanpaolo. Cioni’s career began at the Group’s New York branch in 2000, and since then, he has led numerous strategic initiatives aimed at driving organizational transformation and efficiency.
Cioni’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Intesa Sanpaolo Bank România’s presence in a dynamic banking market. His leadership track record demonstrates a focus on growth, innovation, and operational excellence. With a degree in economics from the University of Florence and an MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business, Cioni is well-positioned to guide the bank through the challenges of Romania’s evolving financial landscape.
In his first statement as CEO, Cioni said, “I am honored to take on the role of CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo Bank România. It is an exciting time for the banking industry in Romania, and I look forward to working with the team to support growth and innovation, while continuing to contribute to the local economy and the financial goals of our clients.”
Prior to his new role, Cioni served as Executive Board Member and Deputy CEO at Alexbank Egypt (2022-2024). He also held leadership roles in Croatia as Vice President of the Management Board at Privredna Banka Zagreb (2017-2022), and was involved with Intesa Sanpaolo Bank’s operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. His extensive experience in Southeast Europe underscores his ability to lead diverse banking operations.
Cioni’s appointment comes at a time when Intesa Sanpaolo Bank România is focused on expanding its role in supporting both local entrepreneurs and foreign businesses. The bank is well-regarded for offering a broad range of services, from local banking solutions to global financial products, leveraging the strength of its parent company, Intesa Sanpaolo, which manages over €13 trillion in client assets and €420 billion in loans globally.
This leadership change, along with other recent appointments to the bank’s board, reinforces Intesa Sanpaolo’s commitment to driving growth and innovation in the Romanian market, while maintaining a strong focus on diversity and inclusion within its leadership team.
