Delgaz Grid Invests €75 Million in Smart Meter Rollout for 487,000 Customers

Delgaz Grid has launched its most extensive smart metering project to date, with an investment of nearly €75 million aimed at installing 487,000 smart meters across six counties in Moldova. The initiative is co-financed through the Modernization Fund and Delgaz Grid’s own resources and is expected to be completed by December 2029.

By the end of 2024, more than 72,000 smart meters had already been installed. The distribution plan includes 120,000 meters in Iași, 141,000 in Suceava, 67,000 in Neamț, 57,000 in Botoșani, 55,000 in Vaslui, and 47,000 in Bacău. In addition to the meters, the project includes the installation of data concentrators, modernization of over 20,000 connections, and relocation of meters to property boundaries.

The Modernization Fund contributes €50 million, while Delgaz Grid covers the remaining €25 million, including VAT. The company has also initiated a tender process for another major smart metering project, set to begin in 2026, which will further expand coverage.

By 2029, Delgaz Grid aims to have installed one million smart meters, ensuring that 85% of its customers benefit from real-time energy monitoring and optimized consumption management. The new system eliminates the need for manual meter readings, as consumption data is automatically recorded and transmitted. This also ensures that invoices reflect actual energy use, removing estimations and allowing customers to better manage their consumption and budgets.

Smart meters offer additional advantages, such as enabling flexible tariffs based on time-of-use and providing real-time data to detect anomalies in the energy network. They can also send alerts about potential issues, allowing for remote intervention or on-site repairs as needed. Furthermore, customers equipped with smart meters can be reconnected or disconnected remotely without additional costs.

This investment aligns with Romania’s broader modernization goals and the digital transformation of the national energy infrastructure.
