Swiss Investors Call for Private and Community Involvement in Romania’s Sports Industry

The growth and development of the sports industry in Romania should depend on private sector investment, with the support of local communities. Despite this, hundreds of sports clubs in Romania are still financed by the state, unlike other countries where the private sector sponsors sports.

In fact, Romania currently has the largest spending per athlete from the state budget in the European Union, with an estimated 1,000 euros per athlete compared to just 3 euros in Germany, according to the Romanian Ministry of Sports. This highlights the need for a fundamental redesign of the sports financial model in Romania.

Private sector investment can help generate revenue streams, increase the visibility and popularity of sports, improve the quality of sports facilities and training programs, and promote social and community development. Recognizing this need, the Chamber of Commerce Switzerland-Romania (CCE-R) will organize an event titled ”Game On: Uniting Business and Sports for Community Development” in mid-June 2023.

The event aims to bring together experts in the sports industry, representatives from the private sector and from authorities to discuss the importance of private investment in sports and how companies and local communities can help sports clubs in Romania understand the benefits of such investment, as well as to initiate a hub to support CCE-R members who are yet shy/doubtful to make this move.

During the event, various topics related to sports club and community financing will be discussed, including the ways in which private companies can contribute to such financing, the key considerations for investors interested in sponsoring sports clubs, and an exploration of the Swiss model for sports financing.

Experts believe that private sector investment in sports could bring significant benefits to the country, including economic growth, job creation, and improved public health. By working together, businesses and local communities can help to transform the sports industry in Romania and create a brighter future for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
