PENNY Donated More Than 5,400 Tonnes of Food in 2025 and Strengthens Its Role in Combating Food Waste

PENNY became the largest contributor to Romania’s Food Banks network in 2025, donating 5,401 tonnes of food products to vulnerable communities through the Federation of Food Banks in Romania (FBAR). The estimated value of the redistributed food exceeds €11 million.

The result highlights the scale that food recovery programs have begun to achieve within the food retail sector, at a time when reducing food waste is becoming both a social responsibility and an important component of the sustainability strategies adopted by major companies.

The donations originated from more than 380 PENNY stores and all five logistics centers operated by the network. The collected products were redistributed through the nine Regional Food Banks to organizations supporting people in vulnerable situations. The mechanism focuses on recovering food products that are approaching their expiration date but remain safe for consumption.

According to data provided by the Federation of Food Banks, the quantity donated by PENNY in 2025 was transformed into approximately 10 million meals. This type of collaboration addresses two major challenges simultaneously: reducing food waste and supporting individuals with limited access to essential resources.

The initiative is part of a broader European trend, where retailers are becoming increasingly involved in food surplus recovery programs amid circular economy regulations and growing pressure to reduce environmental impact.

In addition to its ongoing donation efforts, PENNY also participated in the Easter 2026 edition of the National Food Collection Campaign, during which more than 247 tonnes of products were collected and distributed to over 52,000 beneficiaries through partner organizations.
