Austria – Top destination for investments

Vienna and other Austrian cities – Your gateway to other European markets

Austria is the No. 2 foreign investor in Romania

According to the National Bank of Romania, the investments by Austrian companies amount to 10.15 billion €, or 11.2% of all foreign direct investments in Romania. Austrian investors create over 100,000 direct jobs in around 1,500 active companies and are a driving force for economic development and progress in Romania.

But do Romanian companies also invest in Austria?

Yes, although on a much smaller scale. There are about 100 companies and branch offices in Austria, which are controlled by Romanian shareholders. There are no official figures, but the estimates range from about 40 to 50 million €. The majority is established in the eastern part of Austria, mainly in Vienna and the region of Lower Austria.

Why is Austria an attractive country for international investors?

Austria is not just the geographical heart of Europe, it also assumes a central position in the eyes of many international companies with respect to its intelligent infrastructure. Therefore, Austria is the perfect gateway to other western European markets, especially the so-called German-speaking “DACH” region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

Social security and stability – Austria offers excellent conditions for both foreign and domestic companies. Social services such as a minimum income as well as social insurance and retirement benefits contribute to a high level of social security. Legal and political stability is a fundamental prerequisite underlying the decision of a company to select a particular business location. Internationally operating companies can rely on a high level of political and social stability in Austria. Political stability has a positive effect on the social well-being and security of people in Austria. The agreements reached in negotiations between employee representatives (Chambers of Labor and Austrian Trade Union Federation) and employer representatives (Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and Presidential Conference of the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture) have traditionally enabled a moderate labor cost policy to prevail.

Business Subsidies in Austria

Austria offers foreign investors a wide range of business opportunities including funding and financial support measures for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research and development, company startups, investments, and new technologies. These extend from cash grants and preferential rates of interest to the provision of guarantees. This exceptionally extensive offering enables companies to take advantage of funding and support programs tailored to their specific requirements.

In our Seminar Series “Business Location Austria”, which we organized recently from September 19 to 21 in Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, and Bucuresti in cooperation with ABA – Invest in Austria (the official Austrian Investment Agency) and VBA – Vienna Business Agency, representatives of potentially interested Romanian companies could gather valuable information on how to expand their operations in Europe and in Austria.
