OMV Petrom: The Largest Crude Oil Storage Tank in Romania Now Operational
OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, has operationalized the largest crude oil storage tank in Romania at the Petrobrazi refinery. The tank, built to the latest industry standards, includes double walls and bottom, an aluminum dome roof, and an internal floating cover to minimize vapor emissions. This two-year project required an investment of over 23 million euros.
Radu Căprău, Executive Board Member for Refining and Marketing at OMV Petrom, highlighted, “The new crude oil tank is a major milestone on the Petrobrazi platform, complementing new coking units and other modernization initiatives. These investments enhance our refinery’s safe operation and ensure fuel supply for the Romanian and regional markets, with significant environmental benefits by reducing vapor emissions nearly to zero.”
Standing taller than a 10-story building, the tank has a capacity of 60,000 cubic meters, capable of storing crude oil for approximately 1.2 million fuel tanks. The aluminum dome, the largest in Romania, weighs 53 tons and reaches 15 meters in height. The dome was installed using a unique pneumatic system with 28 centrally controlled lifting devices, a first for Romania.
The tank’s construction was completed last year, with testing conducted earlier this year.
OMV Petrom has invested over 2 billion euros in the Petrobrazi refinery since 2005, with one-third dedicated to environmental impact reduction.
