
Apa Nova București Reduces CO₂ Emissions by 623 Tons in 2023
Apa Nova București, the city’s water supply and sewerage service provider, has published its 2023 Sustainability Report, highlighting significant achievements in environmental protection and sustainable development. Key milestones include a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 623 tons, primarily through the implementation of photovoltaic panels, and an increase in the share of renewable energy sources to 42% of total energy consumption.
The company has also reduced the carbon intensity of its operations by 5% compared to the previous year and achieved a 91.07% implementation rate of action plans for protecting natural environments and biodiversity in sensitive areas. Noteworthy projects include the construction of photovoltaic energy production units with a total investment of €77 million and a pilot project for recovering thermal energy from wastewater, costing approximately 1 million lei.
In addition, Apa Nova invested 13 million lei in electric vehicles for its fleet, further demonstrating its commitment to reducing environmental impact.
General Manager Mădălin Mihailovici expressed confidence in meeting sustainability goals: “The significant progress we made in 2023 through carbon emission reductions and increased use of renewable energy sources reflects our dedication to a sustainable future for all Bucharest residents. We will continue developing sustainable projects and adapting our strategies to meet current and future needs, ensuring a greener future for our community.”
In 2023, Apa Nova supplied approximately 955 million cubic meters of potable water to neighboring localities and processed about 1,261 million cubic meters of wastewater. The efficiency of the potable water supply system was evaluated at 77.87%, surpassing the objective standard of 72% by 5.87%. Another notable achievement was the 24.7% reduction in waste from water treatment and purification equipment, exceeding the target for 2023.
The company also reported zero work-related accidents with temporary incapacity in 2023, down from three cases in 2022, and provided an average of 50 hours of professional training per employee, promoting a safe and progressive work environment.
Apa Nova’s sustainability efforts have received international recognition. The independent rating agency EcoVadis placed the company in the top 10 worldwide with an overall score of 45/100. The “Sustainable Supply Chain Finance” program, developed in partnership with banks, integrates the EcoVadis ESG score in interest rate calculations, facilitating suppliers’ access to financing and supporting cash flow.
Looking ahead, Apa Nova reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable project development with planned investments of approximately 9 million lei for 2024. The company will continue to implement environmental, social, and governance projects, ensuring a long-term positive impact on the community and the environment.
