The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – the business association of first choice for advocacy and business growth in Romania!

A vibrant business community of 460 members – U.S. based, international and Romania companies with total investments above USD 20 billion and employing over 250,000.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania) is a leading business association in Romania, a recognized voice of the business community in the private-public dialogue on matters related to doing business and investing in Romania, Romania’s regional and global competitiveness or the economic ties between Romania and the U.S.

WHAT WE DO

Facilitate an open dialogue with decision makers, recommend measures and priorities that make Romania a better home for business and increase the country’s overall economic competitiveness.

AmCham Romania is an open business forum and today it speaks on behalf of 460 members – U.S., international and Romanian companies doing business in Romania. Our members share their best practices and expertize through AmCham’s advocacy platform that addresses both cross sectorial and industry business priorities.

AmCham Romania is an accredited member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and part of the AmChams in Europe network. In Romania, AmCham enjoys a solid institutional collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest and is a founding member and contributor to Coaliţia pentru Dezvoltarea României (CDR).

AMCHAM’S PRIORITIES

AmCham’s advocacy activity is equally driven by the common business interests of our member companies and by their joint vision for a prosperous country for businesses and citizens alike.

AmCham’s recommendations are the results of the joint efforts of our members clustered in dedicated working groups that cover: Capital Markets & Financial Services, Corporate Governance, Competition and State-Aid, Education, Energy, Environment, Health, Digital Economy, Data Protection and ePrivacy, Labor, Macroeconomics, Structural Funds, Public Procurement and PPP, Real Estate, Taxation, Tourism and Trade Legislation.

The strategic priorities that all AmCham working groups pursue in their work are centered around 6 main pillars of strategic priorities that include: (1) ensuring a favorable climate for investments, (2) developing entrepreneurship, (3) good governance, (4) digital transformation, (5) the future of work and (6) a modern fiscal policy. The umbrella priority that all the above feed is Prosperity for businesses and citizens.

In the electoral years, such priorities are outlined in a comprehensive document that over the years has come to be an AmCham landmark, that is the Priorities for Romania document. In a nutshell, the leading priorities AmCham recommends in the 50-page edition elaborated in 2020, are:

Short-term priorities: Maintaining the investment rating, finalizing public infrastructure projects in various stages of development, identifying a new model of convergence, public administration reform.

Midterm priorities: Romania must capitalize on the opportunity to reposition itself by increasing the relevance of its economy in the region, at the European and global level.

Long-term priorities: To consolidate its economic and geostrategic relevance in the long run, Romania needs a Country Project now, to define Romania’s regional and international role beyond 2030.

AmCham seeks to be a relevant and constructive partner for the public stakeholders, equally promoting forward-looking solutions and responding to present and pressing challenges on the economic agenda.

In this context, part of AmCham’s policy recommendations and analyses are shared with the media to raise awareness on important topics and concerns of the business community. The most recent such analysis looked at Romania’s challenges and opportunities in the context of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRPP). While reiterating our belief that this mechanism offers Romania a unique opportunity to recover the major gaps accumulated in strategic areas, AmCham called for coherent reforms and investments that are critical for NRPP to produce the expected systemic impact.

Topics related to the capital market, state budget sustainability, fiscal policy are recurrent in AmCham’s public communication. AmCham captures yearly in the Business Barometer Survey, its members’ sentiment on the quality of the investment climate in Romania that is shared with the media and largely covered.

Beyond advocacy, events, learning sessions and special projects organized by AmCham Romania for members offer valuable occasions for networking, best practices exchanges and business growth opportunities.

AmCham events include both meetings with officials to discuss advocacy priorities as well as conferences and sessions to exchange best practices sessions.

AmCham goes beyond Bucharest and in 2021 we’ve launched a new initiative – the Meet the Mayor Series, to facilitate an open, hands-on discussion between municipalities and the business community on the priorities of public local administrations and programs to support/attract businesses in cities and metropolitan areas. In S1 AmCham members engaged in dialogue with the Mayors of Brașov, Timișoara and Bacău and members were pleased to learn that all of the three cities make it a priority to be open for business.

We are grateful to all AmCham members for their constant support and valuable contribution to advancing our joint vision for a prosperous Romania and we are pleased to welcome new members in our community who join the existing work streams and use the AmCham platform to promote their business and expertize.
