The National Bank of Romania Museum, in collaboration with Alpha Bank Romania, opened the temporary exhibition “Two Sides of the Same Coin. Means of Transactions – Masterpieces of Art”.
From 22 September, visitors can admire some of the rarest and most precious coins in human history, illustrating their role in the economic development of society as well as their transactional component.
Among the 100 coins on display for the first time in Romania is the hekta, one of the first coins ever issued, made of a natural gold and silver alloy called electrum. The exhibition also includes several coins depicting well-known figures from Greek mythology (gods, heroes and other mythical characters), as well as important historical figures or events.
The first coins minted in Romania, namely the silver drachmas issued by the Greek colony Histria, could not be missing from this exhibition. A collection of about 200 of these coins is in the central bank’s collection.
Visiting the NBR Museum is free on guided tours, but those interested must fill in a form available on the website to register for one of the tours organised from Monday to Friday.
The exhibition is open until early March 2024.
Congratulations Alpha Bank Romania for this successful cultural project!
