Danone: 25 Years of Supplying 15 European Countries with Romanian Milk

Danone Romania is celebrating a quarter-century of using 100% locally sourced Romanian milk to produce dairy products that supply not only the local market but also 14 other European countries. Over the past 25 years, Danone has consistently invested in its Bucharest factory, transforming it into the most advanced Danone facility in Europe with an annual production capacity of 75,000 tons of yogurt.

Since its establishment in Romania in 1996 with the acquisition and modernization of the Miorița dairy factory, Danone has committed to supporting local farmers and communities. The company sources milk from 220 smallholders in Zimnicea and 20 local farms, ensuring high-quality ingredients for its products. This strategic focus on local sourcing has played a crucial role in Danone’s expansion and success across multiple European markets.

Danone Romania’s investment strategy has significantly boosted its production capabilities. Today, the Bucharest factory produces one million yogurts daily, with brands such as Activia, Casa Bună, Cremosso, Danone, Danonino, Delicios, and YoPRO. These products cater to a wide range of consumer preferences, from high-protein options ideal for athletes to plant-based alternatives under the Alpro brand.

Adrian Pascu, Vice President Sales Danone Central East Europe & General Manager Ukraine, emphasized the company’s dedication to innovation, quality, and social responsibility. “Danone Romania has grown alongside generations of consumers and partners, demonstrating a commitment to quality, innovation, and social responsibility. We are proud of our achievements and will continue to offer products that enhance consumer well-being,” Pascu stated.

The company’s socio-economic program, “O șansă pentru familia ta,” launched in 2012 in partnership with the Heifer Foundation and Polaris, has invested €7 million to support local smallholders and foster entrepreneurship. This initiative underscores Danone’s commitment to sustainable development and community support.

In 2023, Danone Romania reported a revenue of 1.099 billion lei, marking a 178% increase from the previous year, with a 6% profit margin amounting to 684 million lei. The company also achieved B Corp certification, joining a global movement of over 6,000 companies dedicated to meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
