BCR Reports Nearly 100% Digital Transactions for Loans and Deposits in H1 2024

Banca Comercială Română (BCR) has achieved a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey, with nearly 100% of its loans and deposits being processed through digital channels in the first half of 2024. This unprecedented level of digital engagement marks a major shift in Romania’s banking landscape, positioning BCR at the forefront of the industry’s digital evolution.

The bank’s commitment to digitalization is evident in the remarkable growth of its George digital ecosystem, which now boasts nearly 2 million active users—a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This platform has become central to BCR’s strategy, offering customers a seamless, technology-driven banking experience that has redefined the way financial services are delivered.

In the first six months of 2024, BCR reported that 94% of consumer cash loans, 97% of credit cards, and 99% of overdraft products were granted entirely online. Similarly, 99% of savings accounts and over 90% of deposits were opened digitally, reflecting a profound shift in customer behavior towards embracing digital banking solutions. The month of June 2024 set a new record, with 91% of all BCR’s products being sold via digital channels.

The success of the George platform has been a key driver of this transformation. Launched as a comprehensive digital ecosystem, George now serves over 2.4 million users, including 160,000 businesses. The platform has continuously expanded its offerings, introducing innovative features such as George SmartEU, which has already attracted nearly 3,000 entrepreneurs seeking information on European and national funding programs. Additionally, the George Junior app, designed to enhance financial literacy among children aged 7 to 14, has reached 45,000 users.

BCR’s digital achievements are not limited to individual customers. The bank has also seen significant growth in its digital services for businesses, with more than 70% of eligible customers initiating their banking relationships through digital onboarding in the first half of 2024. This digital-first approach has enabled BCR to efficiently support the needs of Romania’s entrepreneurial community, further solidifying its position as a leader in the digital banking sector.

The bank’s commitment to innovation extends beyond traditional banking products. BCR has implemented digital payment solutions that have facilitated over 168 million transactions in public transport over the past five years, with more than RON 29 million processed in the first half of 2024 alone—a 16% increase compared to the previous year. The smart parking payment system at Henri Coandă International Airport, which allows for contactless payments, has also seen impressive results, with transactions totaling RON 56 million.

BCR’s focus on digitalization has not only transformed its operations but also significantly enhanced customer satisfaction and engagement. The bank’s Contact Center, which handled approximately 1 million calls in the first half of 2024, has integrated advanced digital tools such as Video Advisory and the ADA chatbot, further streamlining customer interactions.

As BCR continues to lead the charge in digital banking, its achievements in the first half of 2024 underscore the profound impact of digital transformation on the financial services industry in Romania. With nearly 100% of its loans and deposits now processed digitally, BCR is setting new standards for the future of banking.
